UAE National Day: A Celebration of Unity and Vision
UAE National Day, celebrated on December 2nd each year, marks the formal unification of the seven emirates into a single nation: the United Arab Emirates. It is a day of immense pride, patriotism, and joyous celebration across the country.
The Historical Foundation
On December 2, 1971, the six emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, and Fujairah came together to form the UAE. The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined the union on February 10, 1972.
This historic moment was orchestrated by the UAE’s founding fathers, most notably the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first President from Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the first Vice President from Dubai. Their vision transformed a region of individual tribal territories into a unified, modern, and prosperous nation.
How is it Celebrated?
National Day is a nationwide festival of patriotism. The celebrations are vibrant and widespread:
- National Decorations: The entire country is draped in the colors of the UAE flag—red, green, white, and black. Buildings, streets, cars, and homes are decorated with lights, flags, and patriotic symbols.
- Fireworks Displays: Spectacular fireworks light up the sky in major locations like the Dubai Fountain, Abu Dhabi Corniche, and Ras Al Khaimah.
- Car Parades: Long processions of cars decorated with flags and national symbols drive through the cities, honking horns and playing patriotic music.
- Cultural Events: Heritage villages are set up, traditional dances like the Yowla are performed, and exhibitions showcase Emirati history, crafts, and food.
- Concerts & Shows: Major concerts featuring Arab and international stars are held, along with air shows by the UAE’s aerobatics team, Al Fursan.
- Family Activities: Malls, parks, and communities host special events, activities, and offers for families to enjoy.
The Spirit of the Day
Beyond the festivities, National Day is a time for:
- Reflection: Remembering the hardships of the past and appreciating the rapid development and stability enjoyed today.
- Gratitude: Paying tribute to the wisdom and vision of the founding fathers and the leadership of the current rulers.
- National Pride: Celebrating the UAE’s unique identity, its cultural heritage, and its remarkable achievements on the world stage in fields like space exploration, sustainability, and innovation.
- Looking Forward: The day is also aligned with the country’s future-oriented vision, such as the UAE Centennial 2071, which aims to make the UAE the best country in the world by its 100th anniversary.
In essence, UAE National Day is more than a historical anniversary; it is a powerful symbol of unity, a celebration of remarkable progress, and a reaffirmation of a shared and ambitious future.
Happy National Day!
